ECLA is pleased to report the announcement of the new Oliver and Carroll Dabezies Endowed Chair at Tulane University. Oliver H. Dabezies, Jr., MD (1930-2001) was a co-founder of CLAO, now ECLA, and was organizer of its first scientific program in 1964. He served as CLAO's executive vice president for 11 years and was the Editor in Chief of "Contact Lenses: The CLAO Guide to Basic Science and Clinical Practice." Dr. Dabezies held leadership roles within the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology, the Southern Eye Bank, and at the American National Standards Institute Committee that wrote regulations to prevent contamination and blindness from the use of contaminated contact lens products. He was the recipient of many awards, and served over decades as historian of CLAO. The Education and Research Foundation of CLAO/ECLA continues to support an endowed lectureship in Dr. Dabezies’ name. ECLA was amused to learn that Dr. Dabezies’ five children joked that CLAO was their sixth sibling! We look forward to maintaining family ties.
